Radiation Processing Control and Dosimetry

Radiation processing consists of exposing a product to an electron or X-ray beam from an accelerator or to Gamma rays emitted by a radioactive source. This treatment is characterized by the dose, the amount of absorbed energy per mass unit of the treated product. The dose unit is the Gray (Gy), where 1 Gray equals 1 Joule absorbed per kilogram of irradiated material. This process is applied across a wide range of industries, ensuring safety, sterilization, and material enhancement.

Irradiation Testing & Optimization

  • Application sectors include packaging (decontamination, sterilization), medical devices (sterilization), para-pharmacy and cosmetology (aseptization, sterilization), environmental treatments (waste, water, pollutant management), polymer enhancement, electronics (semiconductor modification), and even jewellery/cosmetics (coloring semi-precious stones and glass).
  • Assistance in setting up radiation sources (electron accelerators, X-rays, Gamma) through feasibility studies, plant design, qualification, and performance assessments (IQ, OQ, PQ).

Dosimetry System Implementation

  • Calibration and verification of dosimetry systems using methods such as Alanine, GEX Windose, CTA, FWT, Gafchromic, and more.
  • Calibration of reference irradiation sources and performance qualification of dosimetry systems (assessing uncertainty, reproducibility, stability, and environmental effects).
  • Ongoing research into emerging dosimetry methods, including optical measurements, EPR, calorimetry, and electrical quantification.
